About the Underground Network

9:36 am in About Us by UGN

Evolution of a young plant

We are a network of friends, “on a mission with God” to see a vibrant family of Jesus Christ in close reach, culturally and geographically, of every person in Chicago.

This site is a hub for the activity in the underground. It houses our online social network, an easy way to connect with or start an organic church as well as resources and training for disciples, and a safe place for people to learn about who Jesus is and what we’re about.

The movement of God is moving past the shores of Lake Michigan and is pouring over the city neighborhoods.

We are here to love God and love people. Nothing else matters.

To learn more, read the extended invitation.

About the UGN

The Underground Network (UGN) is a 501(c)3 organization. We want to see vibrant families of Jesus in close reach, culturally and geographically to every person in Chicagoland. Members of the Underground Network engage sanely on the journey at the various levels of Christian community including the house church (or small group) level, the “where two or three are gathered” (aka the level of intentional friendships), the personal prayer life, the ongoing study of God in the world throughout time/geography and the city-wide network of house churches (or small groups).

GIVE

You can make one time or recurring gifts online or via check. Make checks to the Underground Network and mail to:

UNDERGROUND NETWORK

Also, there is a very convenient way to give: give online! We have an assortment of one-time and recurring gift buttons on the ever present sidebar (on the right)!

FAQ

1. I want to talk about money in our group. Any suggestions on how to do that?
We created this pledge card template that helps start the conversation and serve as a tangible reminder about giving. Also, consider exploring 1 Corinthians 9 together as a topical study. It’s an under read passage in the context of building one another up.

2. Is it better to give by mailing a check or paying online?
Both have their strengths and weaknesses, and it comes down to preference. Some have said that they like writing checks, because it reminds them to pray for harvest workers. They like the mindful ritual of taking the time each month to write, remember and reflect. Writing checks helps the UGN avoid payment processing fees (~3%), so that is another upside.

Others prefer to automate the gifts online, so they keep the commitment without fail. They also like the convenience of giving online. It is easy for the UGN to manage online funds, since it cuts down on administrative work. Giving online also saves trees, and we like trees.

Again, giving is giving is giving. Whether you do it by check or online is your choice!

3. Why support local leaders?
We want to invest in those financially who are investing in us spiritually. (1 Cor 9:11)
It is our belief that we can fund a sustainable movement that will ultimately lead to the start of many more vibrant families of Jesus when we “buy the time” of those in our church network who want to plant churches.

4. How does the UGN manage funds received?
Because our income varies dramatically from month to month, we have developed a scaled budget. Essentially there are three separate budgets to be used based on the amount of income in a given month.

The logistics team allocates each gift into certain budgets based on the amount of the gift given. This helps us to avoid unnecessary bloating in certain categories and adequately fund the areas of importance. For example, if one gives $250 a month, the funds are broken down by percentage into the categories below (see the breakdown “% at $200-999). The design emphasizes the values of the network. Note: We allocate larger gifts with an emphasis toward leader support (30% of gifts over $1000 go to supporting leaders and leadership development.)

UGN BUDGET % at $1-199/mo % at $200-999/mo % at $1000 and up /mo
MAINTENANCE 30%  15% 5%
FIRST FRUITS 10% 15% 15%
LEADER SUPPORT 5% 15% 30%
EVENTS 15% 15% 10%
NEEDS 20% 20% 20%
SAVINGS 20% 20% 20%

Descriptions of Budget Labels

FIRST FRUITS refers to income set aside for Kingdom related work outside our network. From this budget, we give a monthly donation to a specific cause or organization outside the network.

LEADER SUPPORT refers to the support given to our in-network local leaders. This helps them put food on the table, meet with people for prayer, coffee, encouragement, coaching and other network-related / kingdom-related activities.

MAINTENANCE is a boring category for things like website bills and other organizational costs.

EVENTS represents money intended for use in providing network functions. We use this money for food, rented space, retreat costs, guest speakers, and generally anything having to do with the costs involved in doing things together.

NEEDS is a savings based category to be used as philanthropic needs arrive both inside and outside the network. This is our money for “orphans and widows”, crises situations and other urgent situations.

SAVINGS is income set aside for future network needs. This is a general savings fund that can be used to further the Kingdom however the network sees fit.

5. My family gives to large nonprofit organizations (currently World Relief and Compassion International.) Are you suggesting that we give to the UGN [at the MACRO level] instead? We don’t have a lot of money.
Great question! We love what God is doing throughout the world, and supporting these organizations is a great way to make a difference, meet new friends and continually get feedback from the front lines. Much like these organizations, we are interested in accomplishing God-tasks locally. We want to see vibrant families of Jesus throughout Chicagoland. If God is calling you to financially support the leaders who are nurturing the next wave of Jesus followers in Chicago, great! If not, support in prayer! Remember to pray to God for harvest workers (Luke 10:2b). Bottom line: Listen to God, and do what He says. We are not here to micromanage your finances. We trust you and we trust what God is doing through you.

6. I’ve heard about the Catalyst Plan. Can you tell me more about it?
This is the plan that catalyzes healthy leaders our network, via Mark Willis’ Catalyst Plan (Mark prayerfully designed this in concert with Ignite Church Planting).

7. Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes! The UGN is 501(c)3 Organization, so you can write off gifts on your taxes.

8. Who actually manages the dollars and cents?
Sean Durbin & Alan Boyle will check the bank account independently at the end of each month and allocate the finances according to this budget. They will each keep a record of the accounts. Please contact them with any questions, concerns or if you are interested in helping with the finances.

NETWORK GATHERING!

Our next network gathering is Sunday, January 29, 2012 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm at 1015 W. Polk Street, Chicago, IL. The gathering is on the 3rd floor, there is parking to the east of the building (via alley access), and we ask that participants bring either drinks and/or appetizers to share. The building is a quarter-mile walk from the Halsted/UIC Blue Line stop. We’re excited to see everyone! The group from Elgin will be facilitating our gathering! Special thanks to Ben and Christy Toh for their generous sharing of their space with us.

Underground Gardening

10:02 am in Latest News, Missions by Mark Willis

One house church in the Underground Network has made it their mission to reclaim an abandoned space in a Chicago city park. This plot of land was used as a literal trash dump for anyone passing by, making the quarter-acre of land a blight on the entire neighborhood in which the house church was located. The project was started February 2011, where a few folks in one house church drew up some plans for a vegetable garden in this space – and in April they picked up the trash and filth, and built a raised-bed garden – with fresh, rich top soil.

Their goal was to follow the spirit of 1 Cor 1: 28, 29 – “For God chose things despised by the world, things considered as nothing, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers to be important…” They invited the entire neighborhood to participate, including several gardeners, many of whom were skeptical of the project’s success. Over the year, more and more volunteers contributed their efforts. There was a good sized harvest (for first time gardeners!) and all the grown produce was enjoyed by neighbors and during the house church gatherings. It was beautiful.

In November 2011, that house church gave birth to another house church, which brought in the neighbors who had worked on the garden – now they knew that there was a Christian church behind the garden, and they wanted to be a part of that kind of church – so this new house church is planning in 2012 to expand the veggie garden, and they are making plans of opening up a new farmers market to invite regional farmers to sell their produce alongside this little urban garden’s yield.

All this, from an abandoned lot.

“God chose the things despised by the world, the things considered as nothing, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important – so no one can boast in the presence of God!”

December News from UGN

3:07 pm in Latest News by RAlanBoyle

Hey everybody,

It’s been a great month for the Underground. As you know, we help support lots of ministries all over the place. This month we gave to two efforts: One donation was made to an organization which operates ministries inside North Korea. If you want more information about this one you can talk to Sean for more details. We also made a donation to Genevra Collins who is working in inner city Kansas City with Hope City. We’re excited about what God is doing in the midwest, and we’re excited to support a fellow midwesterner as she seeks God’s work.

Also this month we created a Meetup.com group. Some of us use Meetup.com to meet new people in the city and now those people can meet the UGN. If you like to use Meetup you can now find and create network wide events on that site. Feel free to make it your own. Events will also continue to be on our website and Facebook.

Remember that our next Network Worship Gathering will be Sunday January 29th at 1:30pm at Westloop Church (1015 W Polk). I’ll be there, all the cool people are going- you should too.

Marry Christmas and safe travels,

Alan

Voices in the Muslim Movement

11:54 am in Latest News, Missions by UGN

UGN Family,

We have an exciting opportunity to pray for our brother and sister as they venture out into God’s mission in a special way this Christmas Season. Crystal Anderson and Nathanael Filbert of the Eckhart Park House Church in the UGN are heading to Cairo, Egypt in the coming days.

They need our prayers!

Please read Crystal’s words and request for prayer, and if you feel led, head to this link, log in, and leave a comment.

by Crystal Anderson

Please pray for God’s will in our trip and that we will be present in the moment.  The purpose of the trip is to give a voice to the people in the Muslim movement that started in Tahrir Square-Cairo in February 2011 and is currently spreading across the Middle East and North Africa.  Is it a movement by the people and for the people or are they being used for an agenda?  God is working in this regional shift of power and we want to document- with God’s filter and not man’s bias.  Our hope is to use this project to inform Americans, specifically Christians, on what is happening and how it affects us.  What can we learn from the Muslim movement and how can we love them in new ways.
Also, we hope to document the Coptic Christian situation in Egypt.  There is a massive movement of 70,000 Christians and Muslims who are praying and fasting for Egypt in caves near the garbage dump of Cairo.  We are hoping to document how God is working in this developing movement.
Lastly, our trip coordinator and translator is an Egyptian Muslim girl studying journalism in Tulsa, OK.  She is already in Egypt planning our trip and we will be staying with her family outside Cairo for New Years Eve.  Pray we will be a loving example of Christ to them and that God will give us His words.  Even though this trip is not a typical missions trip of spreading the gospel, we want to be God’s hands and feet wherever He sends us.
Thank you for your prayers and God bless!

The UGN is having TWINS!

10:46 pm in Latest News by Mark Willis

Hello UGNers!

Twins!

I’m proud to announce that this week there are two new organic churches being planted by members in the Underground Church Network! Nathanael Filbert planted a church in his apartment in West Town on Monday night, and tomorrow (Wednesday) Sean and Rachel Durbin will have a gathering meet in their home in Norwood Park (Northwest Side).  Praise God for these two new communities!  May others far from God find their way to him through these new families of faith.  Click on their names to send these folks congrats, and prayers.

In other news:

We want to THANK YOU all for being a part of the amazing time of worship we had at the most recent 5th Sunday (10/30) Network Gathering.  It was an amazing chance to focus on Jesus Christ, share stories of what God is showing each house church, and eat some great food!  Our network is really coming together in wonderful ways – and I’m proud to be with you all on the journey.

Special thanks to John Shirk, Ellen, Shasa, Patrick Amy and the Shirk girls for their wonderful help in faciliting our time together.  You all put great care in crafting the gathering, and it built up the whole network.

Our next All-Church Gathering is 1:30pm Sunday January 29th, 2012 (5th Sundays).  Mark your calendars! (More details and event signups to come)

Please pray for the newest members of the UGN family, the West Town and Norwood Park house churches — they help all of us take one step closer toward our dream of seeing a vibrant family of Jesus Christ in close reach, culturally and geographically, of every person in Chicago!

First Fruits Donation

10:48 am in Latest News by RAlanBoyle

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that The Underground has made a donation to Lydia Home. Lydia Home has been helping families in crisis and giving a home to abused children in Chicago for 95 years. We are thrilled to have a common fund which allows us to give back to our community. Thank you so much to all of you who donated to UGN this month, Lydia Home thanks you as well. Last month Dave & Angie Arnold received our support for their upcoming work in Michigan.

Incase you don’t know, UGN now has a monthly budget and bank account. If you want the details, contact Alan Boyle, Sean Durbin or Mark or Katrina Willis for a copy of the budget. Each month, a minimum of %50 (so far substantially more) is set aside to give to those in need and individuals and organizations doing the Lord’s work outside our network. We are also saving funds to rise up workers from inside the network.

If you have input as to who might receive a future donation please talk to one of the people mentioned above. If you are interested in contributing to the common fund you can do so via the Paypal button on UGNChicago.com or send a check to PO Box 257404, Chicago IL 60625.
